Outstanding local student teacher win Kupe Scholarship
East Coast MP Anne Tolley congratulates Gisborne student teacher Sarah Morice who has been awarded a Kupe Scholarship at a ceremony in Wellington.
“We want to inspire and support talented people into the teaching profession. Kupe Scholarships do just that by recognising outstanding Māori and Pasifika student teachers,” Mrs Tolley says.
“It’s fantastic to see a student teacher in Gisborne recognised for her academic success and I am confident she will make strong role models for the teaching profession.”
The scholarships will help the student teachers with course fees and a study allowance while also offering professional mentoring and recruitment support after graduation.
Thirty outstanding Māori and Pasifika student teachers in early childhood, primary and secondary education were awarded scholarships. They all have strong track records of academic success.
“National has an unrelenting focus on raising achievement for young New Zealanders. That means supporting our current teachers, and fostering our next generations of teachers, to all be the best role models they can be.
“We want them to inspire the children in their classrooms to help them reach their potential and achieve the best results they can,” Mrs Tolley says.
