Local MP Anne Tolley says a Gisborne-based Puna Reo has been named as a finalist in two categories of the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards.

“Te Puna Reo o Puhi Kaiti is a full immersion early childhood education centre which has changed the way they teach, assess progress and how they view tamariki,” Mrs Tolley says.

“It’s fantastic to see Gisborne education providers looking at how they can do things differently so that our children have a truly positive start to their education.

“This Puna Reo has set out to achieve better learning opportunities and a stronger cultural identity through whānau-style learning, collaboration and high expectations and I’m pleased the work they have done is being recognised.

“The Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards recognise and celebrate those people in our communities delivering the best teaching to children, and those who raise the bar that bit higher.

“Te Puna Reo o Puhi Kaiti is a finalist in two categories – Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the 2016 Focus Prize.”

Category winners receive $20,000 and the Supreme Award winner receives an additional $30,000. More information about the awards is available at
