East Coast MP Hon Anne Tolley says the Motu Bridge replacement is a step closer with the awarding of the contract to Fulton Hogan East Coast.

In January Prime Minister John Key announced the Motu Bridge, the sole one-lane bridge on State Highway 2 between Gisborne and Opotiki, will be replaced.

“This $6.5 million investment in Gisborne’s roads will deliver a better and more efficient passage through the gorge for freight drivers, who transport the majority of Gisborne’s produce north over State Highway 2,” says Mrs Tolley.

“It’s fantastic to hear that the contract has been awarded and the work will soon get underway, with the new bridge expected to be open before Labour Weekend 2017.”

This project forms part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Programme which was announced by the Prime Minister in 2014, and is designed to speed up the completion of transport projects considered to be important to the regions.

“Many people have campaigned for this upgrade and I’m absolutely delighted to have advocated for this investment in our roads.”
